Whiplash can be debilitating. Caused by a sudden movement of the head—either backward, forward, or sideways—whiplash damages the supporting muscles, ligaments and connective tissues in the neck and upper back.
If you have been in a motor vehicle accident, don't assume that you’ve escaped injury if you are not currently in pain. Serious complications can develop well after the insurance claims from the auto accident are resolved. Roughly half of whiplash victims claim that they still suffer with symptoms from their injuries years later. Unfortunately, by waiting too long for treatment, some of the damage from the injury may have become permanent.
